No. PDFluna runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript libraries (PDF.js, pdf-lib, jsPDF, and Tesseract.js for OCR). Your PDF never leaves your device, which makes it safe even for contracts, invoices, or medical records. Verify it yourself: open browser DevTools → Network before using the editor and watch — zero outbound requests carry your file.
Yes. Click the Auto-detect text button in the toolbar and PDFluna will run optical character recognition on the current page. Recognised words become editable fields just like native PDF text. OCR currently supports English; other languages are on the roadmap. For batch OCR across an entire document at once, use the dedicated OCR PDF tool.
You can export your edited document back to PDF, or as JPG or PNG images. The PDF export also embeds the full editable project state, so re-uploading the downloaded PDF later restores the full project. For one-shot conversion of an existing PDF without editing it, see PDF to JPG or PDF to PNG.
Once the page is loaded, most editing operations run offline. An internet connection is only needed to initially fetch the page and, for OCR, to download the Tesseract language data the first time you use it (cached afterwards). A full-offline mode via Service Worker is on the roadmap.
Adobe Acrobat requires a paid Pro subscription to unlock editing. Smallpdf and iLovePDF process files on their servers and limit the free tier by file size and daily tasks.
